Reproduction photography

Practise

Reproduction photography is a specialist field concerned with the faithful documentation of original artworks. Its purpose is not interpretation, but precision: to create accurate, high-resolution images suitable for publication, exhibition catalogues, archives, and long-term record.

The discipline demands careful attention to colour fidelity, tonal balance, surface detail, and scale, alongside an understanding of how artworks are handled, lit, and preserved. For works on paper in particular – including engravings and etchings – the subtleties of line, plate tone, and paper texture require both technical control and sensitivity.

Experience

Over the past decade, I have worked with a range of leading artists, galleries, museums, and publishers to produce an expanding body of books, catalogues, archives, and institutional records. My work has included collaborations with organisations such as the Royal Academy of Arts, the Royal Society of Painter-Printmakers, and the Ashmolean Museum, among others.

My particular specialism lies in the photography of engravings and etchings, where the demands of surface nuance and tonal exactitude are especially pertinent. I have also photographed a range of other media where required, adapting process and approach to suit the specific material considerations of each work. Across projects, the emphasis remains consistent: discretion, reliability, and the careful management of technical and archival standards.

Clients

Reproduction work operates within a framework of trust and expertise. Artworks are often rare, fragile, or historically significant; image rights and publication schedules are equally sensitive.

For this reason, I maintain a deliberately small and established client list, working primarily by recommendation. This structure ensures continuity of quality and sustained professional relationships, while protecting the integrity of both the artwork and the institutions involved.

In order to respect artists’ rights and publication agreements, examples of reproduction work are limited to a minimum on this site. Interested parties are welcome to make contact directly to request further information or portfolio material.
